Mind-blowing arrogance from Haaretz columnist Ari Shavit

From an opinion piece on the web site of Haaretz:

The Netanyahu-Obama meeting in two weeks will be definitive. If the U.S. president wants to prevent a disaster, he must give Netanyahu iron-clad guarantees that the United States will stop Iran in any way necessary and at any price, after the 2012 elections. If Obama doesn’t do this, he will obligate Netanyahu to act before the 2012 elections.

The moral responsibility for what may happen does not lie with the heirs of Chaim Weizmann and David Ben-Gurion. The moral responsibility will be borne by the man sitting in the chair that was once Franklin Roosevelt’s.

That’s funny. I could’ve sworn that Israel had its own government, whose job it is to protect the nation from external threats. I must have missed the memo where that responsibility was passed on to Obama.

  1. If one were to base their convictions and opinions on the propagated talking points in the western media, and accept their delusional contextualization of the Iranian issue, one would think that the Iranian state is a menace and an existential threat to, not only the U.S. and Israel, but the entire world. If one was sufficiently convinced that Iran posed a direct threat to their security, in such a state of fear, one might even support a preemptive attack. This contextualization is so twisted and backwards that while laughable, is also extremely dangerous as it could possibly lead to the death of hundreds of thousands of human beings.

10 years ago, Brian Whitaker wrote in The Guardian that “One of the oldest tricks in the run-up to a war is to spread terrifying stories of things that the enemy may be about to do. Government officials plant these tales, journalists water them and the public, for the most part, swallow them.” This was, as we all know now, the method used to justify the murder of Iraqi civilians and the destruction of their nation by the Bush and Obama administrations. It was a pack of lies – weapons of Mass Destruction, ties with Al Qaeda etc. – destined to occupy Iraq, steal its wealth and keep it under control, regardless of “civilian casualties”

    1. Thanks for commenting. I think the Israeli media is even more critical of the Likud’s stance than the American papers are. This is not new, unfortunately.

  2. What is ethnic cleansing?… isn’t it like this: President Franklin D. Roosevelt put it in 1942, “I actually would put a barbed wire around Palestine, and I would begin to move the Arabs out of Palestine…. I would provide land for the Arabs in some other part of the Middle East…. Each time we move out an Arab we would bring in another Jewish family…” …. and it was far more violent than that !! @

  3. Obama should either help Israel or get out of the way and let Israel defend itself and not impose his absurd conditions which are suicidal for Israel. See MAD is Dead http://www.madisdead.blogspot.com Obama, the emperor, has no clothes.   Finally there he is – exposed by events in Syria in all his ignorance and naiveté.  But what about us? We still have to bear the consequences of his absurd policies.  Our Prime Minister has to maneuver between an apocalyptic villain Ahmadinejad and his narcissistic useful idiot.  He must defeat the madman and outmaneuver the fool!   What a nightmare!

  4. In the event you pay attention to your fears, you will die never understanding what an incredible person you might have been.
